This is the Ohio premiere of The First Breath of Tengan Rei, the international psychological drama by husband-wife filmmakers Ed M. Koziarski, an Antioch College alum, and Junko Kajino, a Wright State alum. Japanese screen star Erika, who made her debut in Kore-eda?s Cannes hit After Life, plays Tengan Rei, a young Okinawan woman who kidnaps Paris, the teenage son of a U.S. Marine convicted of raping her when she was a girl. Unlocking their shared histories, Rei and Paris are drawn together, even as the boy?s father closes in on them. Set against the stunning tropical beauty of Okinawa and the rusted grit of industrial Chicago, The First Breath of Tengan Rei takes viewers on an unforgettable emotional journey.
A Japanese native, Kajino moved to Yellow Springs in 1997 to work on Ed Radtke?s The Dream Catcher. She met Koziarski at the Antioch Area Theater on the set of Koziarski?s senior film A Fool?s Gambit. They were married in 2001 and have produced a number of independent films in Japan, Chicago, and Dayton. Their short film Homesick Blues won acclaim at international festivals in Hawaii, Amsterdam, New York and Chicago. The First Breath of Tengan Rei is their debut feature film as co-writers, directors and producers. They are developing a feature-length version of Homesick Blues. Since 2007, Koziarski has been active in alumni efforts to revive Antioch College. He is a coordinator of Chicago?s Antioch alumni chapter. The First Breath of Tengan Rei is presented as part of the Nonstop Learning Festival.
