Synopsis for Serenity: Shown at the Little Art from a pristine, high-definition digital source, SERENITY stars Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family — squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers — a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister — he gets much more than he bargained for: The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl and her unique abilities. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Dr. HorribleSynopsis for "Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog": "Dr. Horrible" will show Saturday, June 20 at 3 p.m. Conceived as an "online miniseries event" during the 2008 writers' strike, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" is a 42-minute musical romp that bears the distinctive stamp of Joss Whedon. Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother") plays the title character, who video-blogs about his twin goals to join the Evil League of Evil and to woo the fair Penny (Felicia Day, of Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the Web series "The Guild"), a woman he met at the local laundromat. Dr. Horrible is foiled on both fronts, however, by his arch-nemesis, the self-absorbed superhero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion, Whedon's "Firefly"). (Amazon.com)

About the event

CAN'T STOP THE SERENITY AT THE LITTLE ART THEATRE

Equality Now / Can't Stop the Serenity

For the second consecutive year, the independently owned and operated Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs will host two free screenings of the 2005 adventure film SERENITY to benefit the international human rights organization Equality Now.

Screenings will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's screening will be preceded by "Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog" at 3 p.m. (Doors open 30 minutes before show time.) Although there is no admission charge to the event, donations to Equality Now are strongly encouraged. Donations will be collected at the event, and can also be made online. In 2008, more than $850 was donated to Equality Now from the Little Art screenings.

Equality Now works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure. Issues of concern to Equality Now include rape, domestic violence, reproductive rights, trafficking, female genital mutilation, political participation and gender discrimination.

Beginning in 2006, fans of SERENITY and its writer-director, Joss Whedon, began organizing screenings of the film around the world to raise money and awareness to benefit Equality Now. (Whedon was an Equality Now "Men on the Front Lines" honoree in 2005.) This worldwide effort is known as Can't Stop the Serenity, and it has raised more than $250,000 for Equality Now since 2006.

"The Little Art is extremely proud to host these free screenings, and to offer Yellow Springs, Dayton and our neighboring communities this important opportunity to come together in support of equality and opportunity for women around the world," said Little Art owner Jenny Cowperthwaite.

From the Equality Now website (equalitynow.org): "Equality Now is extremely grateful for the support of [SERENITY fans] and inspired by the tremendous energy and commitment they have put into their efforts to support our work to end human rights abuses against women and girls around the world."

SERENITY runs 119 minutes and has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Assocation of America "for sequences of intense violence and action, and some sexual references."

Critics' praise

PRAISE FOR 'SERENITY'

"A sci-fi saga that manages to be at once stirring and screwball, gut-busting and gut-wrenching, and more fun than you had at any bigger-budget movie this past summer." -New York Magazine

"SERENITY evinces the kind of swashbuckling bonhomie that made so many of us fall in love with the original STAR WARS films, a love that was mightily tested by George Lucas' humorless prequels." -Austin Chronicle

"No matter what's coming their way, post-apocalyptic doom or gloom, this James Gang of the galaxy is just plain fun to watch." -Washington Post

"If you're a novice, this is a plucky introduction to Whedon's world and the most fun sci-fi of the year. If you're a devotee, this is the magnificent return you've been praying for." -Empire

"SERENITY shows what might have happened if Han Solo had been the focus of the original STAR WARS instead of whiny Jedi wannabe Luke Skywalker." -Miami Herald
