Praised by Opera News as “vocally charismatic” and possessing of a “golden tenor,” Martin Bakari has performed to great acclaim a wide range of opera, art song, oratorio, musical theater, jazz, baroque, contemporary, and chamber works in important music venues throughout the US and abroad. Trained at Juilliard, Boston University, Tanglewood, and London’s Royal College of Music, his recent and upcoming engagements include appearances with Portland Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Utah Opera, Arizona Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Carolina, Madison Opera, Virginia Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Opera Saratoga, Beth Morrison Projects, the Kennedy Center, the New Hampshire Philharmonic, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Opera Noire, and NY Harlem Productions with whom he has performed Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess in Dresden, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Bari. His recording of Grigory Smirnov’s Dowson Songs was recently released by Naxos Records and featured by Opera News as a “Critic’s Choice” album. A passionate educator and a recipient of Juilliard’s Morse Teaching Artist Fellowship, Mr. Bakari has served as a teaching artist with the Metropolitan Opera and has led masterclasses for voice students at both Carnegie Mellon University and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mr. Bakari is a Yellow Springs native and an alumnus of Mills Lawn Elementary, McKinney Middle School, YSHS, and Friends Music Camp where he has served on faculty for three summers. www.martinbakari.com
